<image:caption>Some of our best MINIs come from: Trade sellers with clean, retail-ready stock Restorers who want a quick, fair deal without listing games Enthusiasts who’ve loved their MINI If the car’s right - and the deal’s right - we move quickly. No tyre-kicking. No lowballing. No waiting around for approval from someone else.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - The Way We Buy MINIs (and Why It’s Different) - Why It Works</image:title>
<image:caption>Buyers get clean, well-sorted MINIs with proper prep notes. Sellers get fast decisions, honest pricing, and no time-wasting. We’re not trying to be the biggest - just the most useful. That means being fair, fast, and sharp with what we buy and how we place it.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - The Way We Buy MINIs (and Why It’s Different) - What We Look For</image:title>
<image:caption>It starts with spec. A clean MINI One Auto with a full MOT history and low insurance group. A Cooper 230 with the right wheels and no rust creeping in. A JCW or GP that’s been cared for, not just driven hard. We’re selective — and deliberately so. We check common weak points, review ownership and service background, and make sure the next buyer won’t be stuck sorting someone else’s problems.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Start your Engines Please! - 7. If You Can, Pay Annually (Not Monthly)</image:title>
<image:caption>Paying monthly can add up to 30% in interest. If you or your parents can afford to pay it all in one go, it’s a big saver. We’ll help you weigh up the best way to do this — including low-interest car finance so you’re not stretched. 8. Safe Parking = Lower Price Driveway or locked garage? Cheaper premium. Dashcam? Cheaper again. We can help fit and source a Dashcam. Alarm - Cheaper again - just ask us if the car comes with a factory/3rd party alarm. 9. Be Honest — But Smart — About Job Titles Insurers are picky. “Barista” might be more expensive than “café worker.” Pick the most insurer-friendly job title without bending the truth. 10. Raise the Voluntary Excess (Within Reason) A higher excess = lower monthly cost. Just don’t go so high you can’t pay it if something happens. £250–£500 is usually the sweet spot for drivers. 11. Build Your No-Claims Bonus Start now, drive clean, and in 5 years you could be paying a lot less! The cars we source are designed to get you through those first years without the drama.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Start your Engines Please! - 1. Pick the Right Car (This Is Where We Come In)</image:title>
<image:caption>Insurance groups matter — a lot. Go for cars in groups 1–10 to keep premiums low. We’re talking stuff like: VW Up! Fiat 500 Suzuki Alto Toyota Aygo Citroën C1 Ford Ka (late models) These aren’t just affordable to insure — they’re also easy to drive, cheap to run, and still fun to own. Every car we source is checked against these criteria because we know what matters at this stage.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6862ff18cde26778eb7733c8/5cbf2476-82a7-472e-a8eb-88002895b8de/mini+coop+on+the+move.png</image:loc>
<image:title>The Retro Journal - Start your Engines Please! - 2. Want Something a Bit Nicer? Go “Low Risk, High Style”</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’re not into bare-bones city cars and want something with a bit more road presence, you still have options. There are slightly more desirable cars that don’t cost a fortune to insure if you’re smart about the spec and engine size. Examples: MINI One (1.2 or 1.4 petrol) – retro styling, but still in lower insurance groups. Check out our MINI Approach Fiesta Zetec 1.25 or 1.0 EcoBoost (non-turbo) – sporty feel without high insurance Volkswagen Polo 1.2 or 1.4 – solid build and great for longer drives Peugeot 208 Active 1.2 – sharp design, but keeps you under the radar We hand-pick these kinds of cars for first-time buyers who want something that looks cool but won’t nuke their insurance premium. The trick is avoiding “GTI”, “S-Line”, or “Sport” badging — even if it’s the same engine underneath, those letters can add hundreds.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6862ff18cde26778eb7733c8/4dba586f-eee5-42c2-8a6e-f950bf927aa3/arnie+ready+r2.png</image:loc>
<image:title>The Retro Journal - Start your Engines Please! - 3. Classic Cars? Yes — Sometimes They’re More Insurable</image:title>
<image:caption>This surprises people, but some retro or classic cars can actually be cheaper to insure than newer hatchbacks — especially if: Retro and Modern classics can be cheaper (especially over 21) You drive low mileage The car’s well maintained and unmodified Cars like the classic Mini, Volvo 240, VW Beetle, or early Mazda MX-5 can qualify for classic insurance policies — which are often based on mileage and ownership type rather than your age. Some insurers like Adrian Flux or Lancaster offer limited-mileage plans with agreed values, which can really help.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6862ff18cde26778eb7733c8/d559c2ae-5fe5-4f41-ac52-cb1f74dea09a/AE36DB4C-6E3E-4CE4-9C97-9EFBE0837555.png</image:loc>
<image:title>The Retro Journal - Start your Engines Please! - 4. Time Your Insurance Quote Right</image:title>
<image:caption>Quotes are cheapest about 21–26 days before you need the cover to start. Leave it to the last minute and prices can jump £200 or more. We always advise you to lock in your insurance early, even if the car’s not in your driveway yet. 5. Add a Parent or Trusted Adult as a Named Driver Legal, simple, and effective: add an experienced driver as a named (not main!) driver. Just make sure the young driver is genuinely the main driver, or you risk “fronting” — and that’s insurance fraud. 6. Add a Parent or Trusted Adult as a Named Driver Black box policies reward good driving and can cut your premium by 30% or more over time.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Why Classic & Retro Cars Make Brilliant First Cars for Young Drivers - 1. Style That Doesn’t Blend In</image:title>
<image:caption>Let’s face it: most new cars look the same. But turn up in a retro Mini, a boxy Peugeot 205, or a clean Mk2 Golf, and people notice. These cars have character. Whether it’s the rounded charm of a Fiat 500 or the ‘80s cool of a Volvo 340, classic designs stand out in a sea of grey crossovers. Driving something different becomes part of your personality—and often sparks conversations you’d never have in a new car.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Why Classic & Retro Cars Make Brilliant First Cars for Young Drivers - 5. Built with Soul—and Built to Last</image:title>
<image:caption>Older cars were often overbuilt by today’s standards. With fewer electronics to go wrong and simpler parts, many classics can go for decades when looked after. You’re not buying something disposable—you’re investing in a piece of motoring history.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Why Classic & Retro Cars Make Brilliant First Cars for Young Drivers - 2. Insurance-Friendly Choices for New Drivers</image:title>
<image:caption>Here’s a surprise: many retro and classic cars are actually cheaper to insure than you might expect. Cars like the VW Beetle, Morris Minor, or old Toyota Starlets often sit in low insurance groups. Pair that with classic car insurance policies (often mileage-based and with limited-use discounts), and you could end up paying less than you would for a modern first car. Some insurers even specialise in young classic drivers—and we can help connect you with the right ones.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Why Classic & Retro Cars Make Brilliant First Cars for Young Drivers - 3. Easy to Fix, Fun to Learn</image:title>
<image:caption>Most retro cars were built before everything was hidden behind plastic covers and computers. That means they’re easier to maintain and often much cheaper to repair. Want to learn basic mechanics? Changing your own oil, replacing spark plugs, or even tuning your carburettor is all part of the fun. It’s a great way to bond with your car—and become a more confident driver too. (And if you’re not into spanners, no worries—we offer support, trusted garages, and even build-to-order services.)</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Why Classic & Retro Cars Make Brilliant First Cars for Young Drivers - 4. A Smart Investment, Not Just a Cost</image:title>
<image:caption>New cars drop in value the second you drive them away. But a well-kept classic or modern classic? It might actually go up in value. We focus on sourcing models with strong resale potential, limited rust, and proper provenance. Whether it’s a base-model Ford Fiesta or a clean Mk1 MX-5, some retro cars are already becoming future collectibles. So you’re not just getting a car—you’re stepping into a growing movement of enthusiasts and future classics.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Dealer Finance Isn’t Always a Deal - Pros of Not Taking Finance from a Dealer or Broker:</image:title>
<image:caption>You stay in control Dealer finance often locks you into long-term agreements with limited flexibility. Going private — whether through your bank, a credit union, or savings, means you decide the terms, not the showroom.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Dealer Finance Isn’t Always a Deal - You’re not forced into overpriced ‘add-ons’</image:title>
<image:caption>Dealer finance packages are often bundled with gap insurance, service plans, or paint protection. Buying with cash or your own finance lets you skip the upsell and choose only what you need.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Dealer Finance Isn’t Always a Deal - More negotiating power and Transparency</image:title>
<image:caption>Paying outright or coming with pre-arranged finance gives you leverage. Dealers often hide discounts behind their finance margins. Take that away, and you can negotiate on real car value — not inflated finance figures.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Arnie, My First Classic: A 1972 VW Beetle - My First Classic</image:title>
<image:caption>It all started in 1998. I was young, broke, and totally obsessed with air-cooled Volkswagens. That’s when I found him, 1972 VW Beetle sitting waiting to be purchased at a car show. It wasn’t the most glamorous introduction to the classic car world… but it was the start of everything. His name Arnie (to be explained)</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6862ff18cde26778eb7733c8/65ecc966-d868-4f9d-87f5-5c2bd35413bf/Front+arnie1.png</image:loc>
<image:title>The Retro Journal - Arnie, My First Classic: A 1972 VW Beetle - At First Sight</image:title>
<image:caption>Arnie was originally cream, and back in 1998 VW Beetles weren’t the go to car for a first time owner. It became evident pretty quickly that he needed some TLC. On the look around when I bought him I was 18, didn’t know a huge amount about cars but knew I wanted a Beetle. Barry the owner, showed me around at the car show, and 1 week later I was ready to buy! Based in Kent I arrived ready to take Arnie home. The 3 hour look around and chat ended in Barry’s house to watch a video of Arnie speed around Brands Hatch on a race day! I was sold! he clearly was having second thoughts letting go of the car!</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Arnie, My First Classic: A 1972 VW Beetle - Behind The Wheel</image:title>
<image:caption>After a quick chat! on price, I handed over my well earned (and scraped together) pounds. Barry said the original owner was crying when Barry drove him off his drive 8 years earlier. His name Arnold! Barry said he named the car Arnie, and would I mind carrying that name on, with tears in his eyes! - absolutely I said - I was a film nerd and this was a match made in heaven. While feeling ever so slightly awkward! I had never driven a classic before that Saturday in April 1998, but in all honesty it was awesome! Pedals upright, rattles in the back, thumps on the suspension. But above all - turning heads and making people smile while going through the town centres and villages on the way home - pure class, a car with character, and extension of me.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Arnie, My First Classic: A 1972 VW Beetle - Part Of The Family</image:title>
<image:caption>By 2000, Arnie got the attention he deserved: a full restoration. We stripped him down, repaired the metal work, and gave him a fresh lease of life. He became my daily driver, my weekend project, and my pride and joy all rolled into one. Check out the matching custom phone! Trips all over the UK, to music festivals, car meets, including an epic 17 hour journey home from Corwall on January 2nd 2000 - we saw in the millenium - pretty much in my Falcon ! One for the Star Wars fans out there! Freinds knew Arnie as well as they knew me, warts and all! He wasn’t perfect, but he had soul. And anyone who’s owned a classic Beetle (any classic car really) knows what I mean when I say that these cars aren’t just transport - they’re characters. Arnie was part of the family, and still is 27 years later.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - Arnie, My First Classic: A 1972 VW Beetle - Full Circle: Time for Another Rebuild</image:title>
<image:caption>Fast forward to today, and Arnie’s showing his age again. Faded paint, bubbling panels, holes, a few rattles and groans that weren’t there before. He needs another restoration. And honestly? I’m excited to bring him back to his millenial best! Because Arnie isn’t just a car. He’s a reminder of how far I’ve come personally. He was my first step into freedom and the classic car world, and now he’s about to get a new chapter. He’ll be back!</image:caption>

<image:title>The Retro Journal - How a 1966 VW Splitty Became the Ultimate Wedding Photo Booth - The Vision: Not Just a Camper, an Experience</image:title>
<image:caption>The idea? Build a fully functional, pro-quality photo booth inside a classic VW camper. That paid us back for the restorartion and up keep. I was working as an event photographer and brand creative back then, so designed ‘Hank the camper’ with a passion for vehicles and top quality entertainment, which has most definately contributed to where we are today. We built: A professional-grade photo booth system with studio lighting A stylish, vintage-inspired interior that doubled as a backdrop Smart power solutions, custom-built tech, and a layout that just worked. For business and camping! The result? A rolling photo studio that turned heads at every event and booked out months in advance.</image:caption>
